Tokyo: In a first, a robot actress is being cast opposite humans in a Japanese nuclear disaster film.

The android robot, called 'Geminoid F', features in the Japanese film 'Sayonara' (Goodbye in Japanese), which will release across the theaters in Japan on November 21.
Geminoid F was designed to look like and act like a human with rubber 'skin' and woman's face, but it is unable to walk and is wheeled around in the film.

While Geminoid F is certainly not the first android to feature on the big screen, most of them are played by real actors or created using visual effects. But, Geminoid F - or Leona in the film - doesn’t have a real actor playing, she listens to the director and performs using her own artificial intelligence.
The plot of the movie revolves around the relationship between a humanoid robot and Tanya, a woman who becomes seriously ill after being exposed to radiation from an unspecified nuclear accident site.
The movie is a joint project of Japanese filmmaker Koji Fukada, playwright Oriza Hirata and Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory at Osaka University.
The film already had an international release during the 28th Tokyo International Film Festival, or TIFF, last week.
