Will submit papers to Centre to seek Rajan custody: Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra Government will submit all relevant documents related to underworld don Chhota Rajan to the Centre to seek his custody once he is brought to India from Indonesia, where he was arrested two days ago, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Government will submit all relevant documents related to underworld don Chhota Rajan to the Centre to seek his custody once he is brought to India from Indonesia, where he was arrested two days ago, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday.

"We will send all documents to the Central Government and subsequently, we will ask for his custody. The Red Corner Notice against Chhota Rajan was issued by Maharashtra and Mumbai Police," Fadnavis told PTI here.

Rajan, one of India's most wanted gangsters, was arrested in the tourist town of Bali on a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol after eluding law enforcement agencies for over two decades.

"Chhota Rajan has committed many crimes in Maharashtra. We will provide evidence against him," said Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio.

He said Rajan will face trial in the state, where he is wanted in multiple criminal cases ranging from murder to extortion.

The cases in which his involvement is suspected include the murder of crime journalist J Dey in June 2011.

The Government is also planning to compile a list of cases in which Rajan is wanted so as to put him on trial after he is sent to Mumbai where he spent much of his early underworld life.

According to serving and former police officers, who have dealt with the Mumbai underworld, the arrest of Rajan is a "major development" and his questioning is expected to shed light on hitherto unknown facts related to cases linked to his syndicate.
