Uniform Civil Code not practical: IUML

The IUML has 18 legislators and is the most powerful party in the Muslim-dominated Malappuram district with 11 out of the 16 seats in the district with it.

Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Saturday said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was not practical and questioned the Union government`s reason for raising it now.

This issue was discussed at the IUML`s leadership meeting held here and briefing the media afterwards, the party`s number two P.K.Kunhalikutty said that the present move by the Narendra Modi government appears doubtful and the general question being asked is why

"Already there is a case in this regard going on in the Supreme Court and the Sharia law has to be discussed and debated by that community. We have learned that there is a questionnaire being circulated on UCC. We are of the firm view that UCC is not in the interest of all and not practical too," said Kunhalikutty, a former state Minister and now the deputy leader of the Congress-led United Democratic Front in the Kerala assembly.

The IUML has 18 legislators and is the most powerful party in the Muslim-dominated Malappuram district with 11 out of the 16 seats in the district with it.
