New Delhi: Days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned visit to Russia, the government on Thursday gave its go-ahead for the acquisition of the S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems from Russia.

The Rs 39,000-crore deal can turn out to be a game changer for the India's defence system against any sort of airstrike as it can destroy any incoming hostile aircraft, stealth fighters, missiles and drones at ranges of up to 400 km.

The deal, which was sanctioned by the defence acquisitions council (DAC) headed by the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, will give India an edge over the hostile neighbours in terms of air defence.

Under the deal, India is expected to get five air defence missile systems. Three of the systems are likely to be deployed in west (read Pakistan) and two in the east (read China) to counter the threat from neighbouring countries.
